Reel Thursday: The Bling Ring (2013)

Some are probably familiar with this yet some are not. Like me, I've only known about the actual events that occurred in real life upon finding out about this movie. I first saw its trailer when I watched G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and because Emma Watson was in the movie, I got more interested in it. The movie is about the real life "Bling Ring," who were a group of teenagers who robbed celebrities' homes. Some of the celebrities they robbed were Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, etc. I was actually quite intrigued with the idea of going in a celebrity's home while they're gone and getting their stuff. It's just like everyone's dream of going to a shopping mall at night and getting whatever it is that we want. The movie is based on real life events, and that's why it's more exciting.

I'm not going to use their real names and just go with what the movie named them instead. You can search for their real names though if you're curious.

The mastermind: Rebecca Ahn (the one on the right). She and Marc Hall (the one on the left) became close friends in high school because of their mutual interest, which is fashion. They hail from a high school for "drop outs" or "special kids" and because of that, many of their peers are quite on the wild side.

The two continue to know more about each other and their other peers like Emma Watson's character, Nicki Moore, and so they party it out and get even more wasted than ever.

Nicki Moore is actually a rising star (same as in real life) just then. She has sisters and one of them, Sam Moore, is also quite a celebrity.

The first house that they robbed, with just Rebecca and Marc, is Paris Hilton's. They weren't intending to really rob the house and turn it upside down. Rebecca just wanted to get some clothes, bags, or jewelry to satisfy her craving for a lush life. Lucky for them, Paris Hilton just leaves her spare key under the door mat, so they just easily went in her house.

Rebecca and Marc didn't just go to Paris Hilton's house once. Whenever Rebecca feels like getting a new dress or bag, and Paris is not home, they go in. They even went with their other friends like Nicki Moore and they all enjoyed getting some of Paris' stuff and some cash also.

Whenever they have the chance of doing drugs, they also do it. This particular scene above was when Rebecca got some drugs from a open car after robbing some celebrity's home. They used it on their way home.

Their way of planning their burglary is simple: whenever there is news that a celebrity is going somewhere and leaving their house, Marc will find out where that celebrity lives and then go to the house. Surprisingly, these houses don't have a burglar alarm of some sort, and even though they have CCTV cameras, the robbery will not be found about until they realize that some of their stuff are missing.

This is Audrina Patridge's house, and because Rebecca 'loved' Audrina's style, they went to get some of her stuff.

This was in Orlando Bloom's and Miranda Kerr's house, and Marc got some (or maybe most) of Orlando's Rolexes, and also a bundle of cash.

This is Lindsay's house. Lindsay was Rebecca's idol and so she really had to go there and get some of her clothes, shoes, bags, etc. In the scene above, it's shown that she's smelling (and even put on some of) Lindsay's perfume.

These young people were satisfied with what they're doing because having those luxuries that they can't afford being a teenager in high school, is already a fulfillment for them. However, sooner or later they would be found out because they weren't really so discrete in doing those crimes that they committed, because they would tell other people what they did out of being proud of themselves.

The case was eventually tried in court and they were all convicted with different sentences, depending on their roles in each of the crimes they committed. The masterminds, Rebecca Ahn and Marc Hall, received the longest sentences.

Towards the end of the film, it was shown how Marc is serving his sentence in jail.

Nicki Moore, on the other hand, gained much popularity with this case (as she is a rising star) and was being depicted as using the crime that she was involved in to become more popular. During her live interview, she 'promoted' her website where she 'documents' her life after the issue.

This movie might or might not portray the real life events that well and it is also sort of a commentary already on what actually happened. That's why some people would judge the film as something that is irrelevant and that it should not have been done as it could twist some information, but having this sort of film is brilliant in my opinion. It's satirical, and a fresh one at that. It shows what young people nowadays can do because of their desire and determination. As I mentioned earlier, it's satirical, and it should be seen as giving a deeper message on what issues in our society are currently facing. It's a reality that we have to face and by watching this film, we can understand more of what pushes an individual (especially a young person) to participate in those kinds of activities, and how they face the consequences of their actions.
